Proctored Exam Policies and Procedures

The FSU Assessment and Testing is using several guidelines in order to approve new test centers or proctors. To find a proctor a student should select an available proctor using the online proctor designation form. If a proctor is not located within 100 miles of the student, the student can contact our center at testing@campus.fsu.edu to identify a testing center within their immediate area. If the student is in the military, the immediate superior should contact us to arrange for an appropriate proctoring site.

In order to qualify as an approved proctoring site for FSU distance learning exams, the following requirements must be met:

Technical Requirements

  • At least one working email address
  • High-speed internet access
  • Printer
  • Scanning and/or faxing capabilities

Proctor Qualifications

  • May not be a relative, friend, spouse, or coworker of the examinee.
  • Must be willing to comply with policies and procedures.
  • Must have experience proctoring internet-based exams.

Policies and Procedures

  • Rigorous method for checking examinee's identity. If a student does not have their ID the proctor must not allow them to test.
  • Students' cell phones must be turned off completely while in the testing room. If a student's cell phone vibrates, makes any alert or sound, or is otherwise found to be on, before or after being seated, the student's exam will be terminated and/or the student will forfeit the chance to test. Students must wait until they exit the testing room prior to turning their cell phone back on.
  • Students may not bring loose papers (study guides, notes, or blank paper) into the testing room, unless specified in the instructions on their exam. If scratch paper is provided, it must be turned in before leaving.
  • Students must be continually watched throughout their exam administration. The method in which this is completed can vary from center to center.
  • The ratio of proctors to examinees cannot be larger than 1:10.

A committee of supervisors on the Distance Learning team reviews the answers to the questionnaire and the proctor's technical abilities to determine if they will be approved for proctoring. Once a decision has been made the student is notified of the status of the proctor, and what additional steps to take after completing this task.

If you have any questions about our policies and procedures for approving proctors, feel free to contact our office by email at testing@campus.fsu.edu.
